Letter: Cummins stand seeks equal protection for all

Author : Date : 2013-7-29 10:35:57

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Cummins Engine Co. took a position against apartheid and joined the boycott of South Africa (to the company’s financial detriment at the time), I was proud to be a stockholder and personally acquainted with Cummins officials who made that moral and ethical

decision.

Now, the company is stepping up once again, this time voicing support for a moral, ethical and legal position — namely, that same-sex married couples are entitled to the same benefits under federal law that go to all other married couples.

To do otherwise would abridge the privileges and immunities of some citizens as well as deny liberty and protection of the laws, all of which are guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

It is sad that Mr. Chandler and Mr. Sherlock, who have written of their displeasure with Cummins via these pages, do not understand the company’s position.

Voicing the company’s position in support of many of their employees and stockholders who were being denied benefits accorded to other employees and stockholders was not merely a statement supporting fairness but it also enhances the company’s ability to attract and retain a highly qualified workforce, thus boosting the bottom line.

Chandler and Sherlock might take heart in the fact that since the activist U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Clinton, a bevy of corporations such as Koch Brothers Industries, Chick-fil-A, Papa John’s Pizza and Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands are spending millions in an effort to deny gays and lesbians those rights which the Constitution guarantees all of us.
